Career Highlights At-A-Glance:

  • Former President and CEO of NWQ Investments and Tradewinds Global Investors
  • Former President and Executive Managing Director of Nuveen Investments (ISG)

Michael Mendez is a twenty-year investment industry veteran and the former President of Tradewinds Global Investors, the specialist investment firm he helped found in 2006. In this capacity, Mike’s primary responsibilities encompassed all of Tradewinds’ non-investment functions including strategy, compliance and marketing, as well as day-to-day operations. Mike also chaired the firm’s executive committee.

Prior to his involvement at Tradewinds, Mike was the key architect of the business model that transformed NWQ Investments from a single-product organization with $6 billion in assets under management to two highly respected, institutional-quality, multi-product investment platforms reaching in excess of $65 billion of assets under management.

From the time Nuveen acquired NWQ in 2002 through 2009, Mike played a key role in Nuveen’s corporate development (M&A) activities. While serving in this capacity for eight years, he was involved in sourcing and evaluating over 150 potential strategic investments. In addition, Mike led the design and build out of the Nuveen Institutional Services Group (ISG) platform from its inception in 2003 through 2005, while he was also the president of NWQ. This initiative proved remarkably successful growing institutional assets under management to approximately $40 B across 750 clients – representing approximately 1,000 separate account mandates.

Joining NWQ in 1989, Mike was named the firm’s President and Chief Operating Officer in 1999 and its chief executive in 2001. In a prior position, Mike was responsible for marketing and client service at Morison Asset Management. He began his career at General Electric Company.

Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from San Jose State University. While at General Electric, he completed the firm’s corporate marketing/finance programs. He earned the certified investment management analyst designation from the Wharton School.
